NotesI was genuinely interested in drawing it. It took me a long time, but it turned out well!

Meldi was supposed to be my commercial mascot. At the time, I was developing my professional website, where I wanted to take orders for character design, but somehow it didn’t work out. I guess that’s because I had no experience in promoting my business, and besides, I have very specific personal principles according to which I did not want to engage in bold and brazen advertising. Having grown up since then, I understand that I just didn’t even need to try to create such a service – I don’t like it anyway, but the understanding of how to act appeared only years later.

Anyway, I’ve kept this drawing of Meldi ever since, and for many years she didn’t even have a proper name – I’ve come up with it only when I was going to compete in a certain contest, but then changed my mind. There are still traditional sketches with her that can be seen below:

Meldi Megabat -- Sketches
The first two sketches of Meldi. The final image was made based on the leftmost one.
Meldi Megabat -- Sketches 2
From the backside and a small portrait.
Meldi Megabat: Anime -- Sketches
Meldi in the style of Japanese animation.
Meldi Megabat: Cartoon Style -- Sketches
Cartoon Meldi.

I drew this cute bat in several styles to demonstrate my skills. Now I understand that back then, my level would not be of interest to anyone. However, the most difficult thing is when there is no one to properly evaluate your work. When I was hired as a 2D artist two years later, I was shocked by other artists’ comments about my work. Of course, some of them were subjective, but a lot of them hit the most pained spot and this forced me to improve.
